Shares of Lithium Americas (LAC.US) climbed 6% on Wednesday after JPMorgan resumed coverage with an "Overweight" rating and set a price target of $6. The firm's decision follows an upward revision to its long-term lithium price forecasts, which are expected to bolster the company's earnings power and net asset value beyond 2029.
Analyst Rock Hoffman noted in a report that the shift to a more constructive stance reflects lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) prices persistently trading above $20 per kilogram since mid-February—currently at $22.30 per kilogram—along with expectations of a supply deficit by the end of the decade. Hoffman highlighted that Western greenfield supply remains constrained due to slower capital deployment and extended ramp-up timelines for previously curtailed assets, dynamics he believes won't be fully offset by stronger demand from energy storage systems (ESS) and electric vehicles (EVs).
Furthermore, the analyst cited recent progress as bolstering confidence in the execution of the Thacker Pass project, the company's lithium mining and processing venture in Nevada. Hoffman pointed out that detailed engineering at Thacker Pass is over 95% complete, with procurement exceeding 80%. Combined with ongoing U.S. policy focus on securing domestic critical mineral supplies, he noted that construction timelines, cost visibility, and customer demand are becoming increasingly de-risked. This, he added, supports a valuation normalization toward producing-asset levels as the project advances.
Where does this leave investors? JPMorgan's upgraded stance underscores a growing conviction in lithium's long-term fundamentals, driven by persistent pricing strength and a tightening supply outlook. For Lithium Americas, the de-risking of Thacker Pass appears to be a pivotal factor, as successful execution could position the company to capitalize on the anticipated market imbalance. The $6 price target implies meaningful upside from current levels, contingent on the project staying on schedule and the lithium market maintaining its momentum into the next decade.
