Hyundai Pushes Back In-House Driving Assistance Launch to 2029, Adopts NVIDIA Solution in the Interim

Hyundai Motor Group has revised its timeline for introducing a mass-produced vehicle equipped with its proprietary Atria AI driving assistance system, moving the target to the second half of 2029—roughly two years later than the previously announced goal of late 2027. During the interim period before the in-house system reaches production, the group will roll out Level 2+ and Level 2++ vehicles powered by NVIDIA technology in phases starting in 2028.

NVIDIA solution is set to debut first in 2028. According to the roadmap disclosed by Hyundai Motor Group, Level 2+ models built on the NVIDIA vehicle computing platform and driving software are slated for launch in the first half of 2028, followed by Level 2++ models in the second half of the same year. Level 2+ primarily supports hands-off driving in highway scenarios, while Level 2++ extends driving assistance capabilities to urban road conditions. Both systems remain within the scope of driver assistance technology, meaning drivers must continuously monitor the road and remain responsible for vehicle operation.

In March, Hyundai Motor and Kia expanded their strategic partnership with NVIDIA, establishing a scalable autonomous driving architecture based on the NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion platform. This architecture will cover driver assistance systems for production vehicles as well as Motional's Level 4 robotaxi business.

Hyundai Motor Group will continue developing its in-house Atria AI alongside the adoption of the NVIDIA solution. The system is being jointly developed by the group's Advanced Vehicle Platform division and its software subsidiary 42dot, utilizing an end-to-end artificial intelligence architecture to handle vehicle perception, decision-making, and control tasks. Vehicles equipped with Atria AI are scheduled to enter mass production in the second half of 2029, marking a delay of approximately two years from the original plan. The group will collect real-world road data through the NVIDIA platform and integrate that data into a unified training process to develop and refine its proprietary models.

Hyundai has stated that the objectives of its collaboration with NVIDIA include accelerating the commercialization of driving assistance features and progressively internalizing core driving AI capabilities. The company will pursue a parallel development strategy, advancing both the collaborative solution and its in-house platform simultaneously.

Hyundai Motor Group plans to consolidate driving data previously collected separately by Hyundai, Kia, 42dot, and Motional into a unified "data flywheel." With annual sales exceeding 7 million vehicles across approximately 190 countries and regions, the group aims to leverage its production scale to expand the real-world road data needed for model training. The group anticipates that as vehicles equipped with the new driving assistance systems increase, actual driving data will accumulate at a faster pace starting in 2029, and it projects surpassing the cumulative driving data scale of competitors around 2033.
