Hong Kong Stock Alert: Tsingtao Brew Drops Nearly 3% on Limited Sector Catalysts and Weak Sales

Shares of Tsingtao Brew (00168) slipped nearly 3%, trading down 2.56% at HK$40.40 with turnover reaching HK$152 million at the time of writing. The decline comes as CLSA noted in a research report that the peak summer season is drawing to a close, with beer sales volumes falling more sharply than anticipated and a lack of near-term catalysts in the sector. The brokerage also highlighted that aluminum prices and barley costs rose 15.9% and 8.2% year-on-year respectively in August, assigning "Outperform" ratings to both Tsingtao Brew and China Resources Beer.

On the earnings front, BofA Securities indicated that Tsingtao Brew's second-quarter results missed expectations due to soft sales volume. The company's first-half revenue and net profit saw year-on-year changes of -4.1% and +0.4%, respectively, while the second quarter recorded declines of -6.7% and -3.4%. The quarter's sales volume fell short of projections, primarily attributed to adverse weather conditions, a sluggish dining channel, and the company's deliberate strategy to de-emphasize lower-tier products.
