Global Equity Markets Face Potential Unwinding Risk as Yen Strengthens, Warns Saxo

Saxo Markets has issued a cautionary note indicating that the appreciation of the Japanese yen against the US dollar could trigger a broad unwinding of some crowded, highly leveraged positions in global equity markets.

Charu Chanana, the chief investment strategist at Saxo's Singapore office, highlighted that assets ranging from richly valued software companies and AI-related semiconductor stocks to interest-rate-sensitive plays like real estate investment trusts (REITs) are all exposed to potential downside risks.

"The most vulnerable areas are typically where high valuations, crowded positioning, high leverage, and low liquidity converge," Chanana wrote in a recent report.

She further elaborated, "For years, investors have borrowed yen at extremely low costs to fund investments in higher-yielding currencies and risk assets. Funds facing losses or rising margin requirements are likely to first sell off their most liquid and profitable positions, regardless of whether the fundamentals of those companies have changed."

The strategist's remarks underscore the fragility of strategies that depend on the yen carry trade, suggesting a shift in currency dynamics could force rapid portfolio adjustments across the globe.
