Hong Kong MPF Sees HK$24.4B Investment Gain in August, HK$4,917 per Member

According to the latest data from MPF Ratings, Hong Kong's Mandatory Provident Fund achieved a 1.46% investment return in August, marking the sixth positive month this year and bringing cumulative returns to 7.79% since the start of 2026. The total investment gain for August reached approximately HK$24.4 billion, pushing year-to-date earnings to HK$122.1 billion. Based on the fund's 4.97 million members, this corresponds to an average gain of about HK$4,917 per individual for the month, while cumulative average earnings per member stand at HK$25,221.

Driven by both investment returns and ongoing contributions, the total asset size of the MPF system rose further to HK$1.71 trillion by the end of August. This translates to an average account balance of approximately HK$343,400 per member, representing a 7.79% increase compared to the end of 2025.

Looking at asset classes, Asian equities continued their strong performance throughout 2026, posting a 3.53% return in August and leading all categories once again. Year-to-date gains for this segment have reached an impressive 25.58%.

Francis Chung, Chairman of MPF Ratings, noted that financial markets continue to face volatility amid persistent uncertainties surrounding Middle East geopolitical tensions, tariff policies, and the global economic outlook. He emphasized the critical importance of diversification, highlighting that the MPF Authority's low-fee Default Investment Strategy funds play a pivotal role in helping members achieve their savings, investment, and retirement objectives.
