China's pricing landscape demonstrated coordinated improvement in August, with both consumer and producer inflation measures rebounding from the prior month's readings.
According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, the consumer price index rose 0.8% year-on-year last month, a 0.3 percentage point acceleration from July, while the producer price index climbed 3.8% annually, also expanding by 0.3 percentage points. On a monthly basis, both gauges flipped from declines to gains 鈥?the CPI advanced 0.4% month-on-month, matching the 0.4% sequential uptick in the PPI.
Where the rebound originates
The latest upturn is largely attributable to elevated energy prices. Rising international crude benchmarks drove domestic gasoline prices sharply higher on a monthly basis, pushing the energy sub-index within the CPI from a 0.6% annual gain to a 4.1% surge. Meanwhile, higher global oil and non-ferrous metal prices flowed through import channels into the factory sector, serving as the predominant factor behind the PPI's return to positive month-on-month territory.
Elsewhere, Dong Lijuan, chief statistician at the urban department of the National Bureau of Statistics, noted that rapidly expanding computing power demand contributed to price increases for mobile phones, tablet computers, and data storage equipment 鈥?rising 2.3%, 2.1%, and 2.1% respectively, which together contributed approximately 0.03 percentage points to the CPI's monthly uptick.
Consumer prices: monthly reversal, modest annual firming
Turning to specifics, the nationwide CPI swung from a 0.1% month-on-month decline in July to a 0.4% gain in August. On a monthly basis, domestic gasoline prices reversed from a 10.7% drop to a 7.2% advance, contributing roughly 0.21 percentage points to the CPI's sequential increase. Gold jewelry prices climbed 7.6% after falling 2.6%, adding approximately 0.04 percentage points.
Food prices turned from flat to a 0.4% monthly rise, contributing around 0.07 percentage points. Within the food basket, fresh vegetable prices jumped 5.5%, widening gains by 4.2 percentage points amid hot, rainy weather and seasonal crop transitions. Egg prices reversed from a 2.1% decline to a 2.4% increase as laying hens entered summer downtime, while pork rose 1.3% on reduced hog supply. Combined, these three items added roughly 0.12 percentage points to the monthly CPI. Conversely, ample seasonal fruit supply pushed fresh fruit prices down 2.5%, and fishery products fell 0.9% following the end of fishing moratoriums in certain sea areas, together subtracting about 0.07 percentage points.
Service prices edged up 0.1% month-on-month, a 0.3 percentage point moderation from July, contributing 0.04 percentage points. During the summer holiday period, transportation vehicle rentals, airfares, and hotel accommodation prices advanced 3.3%, 3.0%, and 1.0%, respectively.
Year-on-year, the CPI rose 0.8%, widening by 0.3 percentage points, primarily on expanding energy price gains. Energy prices accelerated from 0.6% to 4.1% annually, contributing 0.28 percentage points to the CPI 鈥?0.24 percentage points more than the previous month. Gasoline prices climbed 9.3% year-on-year, with gains widening by 8.3 percentage points. Excluding energy, industrial consumer goods rose 1.8%, adding 0.42 percentage points; gold jewelry jumped 33.6%, while tablet computers, computers, and mobile phones advanced 21.5%, 19.6%, and 11.0% respectively, all with expanding gains.
Services rose 0.8% year-on-year, contributing 0.38 percentage points, with travel-related services up 1.3% and medical services gaining 4.0%. Food prices fell 1.4%, a narrowed decline, dragging the CPI down by 0.24 percentage points; pork dropped 11.8%, a 1.5 percentage point improvement, while fresh vegetables, fruit, grains, cooking oil, aquatic products, and dairy declined between 0.5% and 2.8%, together reducing the index by 0.10 percentage points. Egg prices surged 18.5%, contributing 0.07 percentage points, while mutton, beef, and poultry advanced 1.1%鈥?3%, adding 0.07 percentage points combined.
Producer prices: monthly swing to gains, annual pace quickens
The PPI flipped from a 0.7% monthly decline to a 0.4% increase, characterized by several distinct dynamics. First, imported cost pressures lifted domestic sectors: oil extraction, refined petroleum products, and organic chemical raw materials rose 10.4%, 4.1%, and 0.9%, while non-ferrous metal smelting and processing gained 0.8% 鈥?these four industries combined contributed approximately 0.31 percentage points to the sequential PPI gain.
Second, industrial upgrading spurred demand in emerging areas. Electronic circuit manufacturing gained 3.5%, virtual reality equipment production rose 1.9%, and service-consumer robot manufacturing advanced 0.3%. Biomass fuel processing and comprehensive waste resource utilization each rose 0.3%.
Third, seasonal patterns emerged in select sectors. August's higher electricity and coal consumption lifted coal mining and washing prices by 2.8% and power supply prices by 1.4%. Conversely, hot, rainy weather curtailed construction activity, pulling down ferrous metal smelting and processing by 0.9% and non-metallic mineral products by 0.2%.
Year-on-year, the PPI accelerated to 3.8%. Coal mining and washing prices surged 26.6%, non-ferrous metal smelting and processing advanced 20.8%, oil and gas extraction plus petroleum, coal, and other fuel processing gained 10.5% and 11.1%, while chemical raw materials, electrical machinery, and computer/communications/electronics manufacturing rose 9.1%, 5.9%, and 5.3% respectively. These seven sectors collectively added 4.24 percentage points to annual PPI growth, an increase of 0.37 percentage points from July. The largest downward contributors 鈥?including electricity/heat production, automobile manufacturing, non-metallic mineral products, pharmaceutical manufacturing, beverages and tea, and agricultural food processing 鈥?declined between 1.7% and 5.3%, reducing the index by 0.74 percentage points combined.
