U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday took to social media platform X to criticize the stock market's decline following strong jobs data, attributing it to an "inflation fear" that he said has distorted market responses for 25 years. Trump wrote that whenever positive economic figures are released, the market falls because "we’re living under False Reality that if things are good, you’ve got to 'KILL IT' because of a 'fear' of Inflation."
"GROWTH DOES NOT CAUSE INFLATION!" Trump declared, arguing that the U.S. should aim for GDP growth of 15% to 20%, not the current 2% to 4%. He also noted that each percentage point in interest rates costs the U.S. $650 billion annually and that the country should pay the lowest rates in the world. Trump stated that abandoning the "growth causes inflation" theory would allow the U.S. to pay off its debt and achieve greater financial prosperity.
The president did not specify the exact jobs figures but called them "GREAT Numbers." His reference to a 25-year trend lacked supporting data. The U.S. Labor Department earlier reported that nonfarm payrolls rose by 142,000 in August, below expectations.
