Microsoft vs. Amazon: Which Stock Is the Better Investment? Comprehensive Comparison of AI and Cloud Computing Giants

TradingKey - Microsoft (MSFT) and Amazon (AMZN) are both among the most influential companies in the global tech industry and core beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence and cloud computing wave. However, significant differences exist in the two companies' business models, profitability structures, and future growth paths. For long-term investors, which one is a better investment: Microsoft or Amazon?

Microsoft and Amazon: How Do Their Business Models Differ?

Microsoft's core strength lies in the strong synergies among enterprise software, cloud computing, and AI. Microsoft 365, Azure, Dynamics 365, GitHub, and Copilot cover a large number of enterprise customers, enabling Microsoft to directly integrate AI capabilities into its existing software ecosystem.

For fiscal year 2026, Microsoft's full-year revenue reached $331.8 billion, up 18% year-over-year, with net income reaching $133.7 billion. In the fourth fiscal quarter, revenue from Azure and other cloud services grew 43% year-over-year, while quarterly Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $59.3 billion.

By contrast, Amazon's business is more diversified, with revenue primarily derived from e-commerce, AWS cloud computing, digital advertising, and subscription services. E-commerce provides a vast user and data foundation, while AWS serves as an important source of Amazon's profits.

In the second quarter of 2026, Amazon's revenue reached $200.6 billion, up 20% year-over-year; AWS revenue reached $42.2 billion, up 37% year-over-year, marking its fastest growth rate in 18 quarters. AWS operating profit for the quarter reached $16.6 billion, accounting for about 60% of Amazon's total operating profit.

Azure vs. AWS: Who Benefits More From AI?

Cloud computing is the area where Microsoft and Amazon compete most directly.

AWS boasts mature global cloud infrastructure and a vast enterprise customer base, while continuously strengthening its generative AI presence through in-house AI chips like Trainium, Bedrock, and its partnership with Anthropic. As enterprise demand for AI training and inference grows, AWS is expected to become a key driver of Amazon's future growth.

Microsoft Azure's advantage, meanwhile, lies in its software ecosystem. Enterprises can integrate Azure with Microsoft 365, GitHub, and Copilot, enabling Microsoft not only to generate AI infrastructure revenue but also to increase revenue per customer through software subscriptions.

Judging by the latest growth rates, the gap between the two companies is not significant: Microsoft's Azure revenue grew 43% in the fourth fiscal quarter, while Amazon's AWS grew 37% in the second quarter. Both companies are experiencing a rapid expansion in demand for AI computing power.

Microsoft vs. Amazon: Which Is More Profitable?

One of Microsoft's biggest investment advantages is its high profit margins and stable software subscription revenue. Microsoft 365, Azure, and enterprise software generate substantial recurring revenue, keeping its overall profitability relatively stable.

While Amazon has a larger revenue scale, its e-commerce profit margins are significantly lower than those of software and cloud computing. However, as AWS expands, logistics efficiency improves, and the advertising business grows, there remains room for Amazon's overall profitability to rise.

Notably, both companies are building out data centers on a massive scale to compete in the AI market. Microsoft has already noted that AI infrastructure investments are putting some pressure on its cloud gross margins, while Amazon's free cash flow is also being impacted by rapid capital expenditure growth.

MSFT and AMZN: Which Is the Better Investment?

If investors prioritize earnings stability, enterprise software moats, and AI monetization capabilities, Microsoft may better align with this investment thesis. The ecosystem formed among Microsoft 365, Azure, and Copilot enables Microsoft to achieve monetization across both AI infrastructure and AI software levels.

If the focus is more on growth potential and room for margin expansion, Amazon is worth attention. AWS growth is re-accelerating, while e-commerce margins, advertising, and AI infrastructure businesses still have room for further expansion, making Amazon's growth elasticity potentially higher.
