SPIC Brazil to Invest 1.4 Billion Reais in São Simão Hydropower Expansion

China's State Power Investment Corp.'s subsidiary SPIC Brazil will invest 1.4 billion reais to add a seventh generating unit (UG7) to the São Simão Hydropower Plant, after winning the 2026 Capacity Reserve Auction.

The plant will contribute 310 MW of clean and firm energy capacity to Brazil's National Interconnected System, according to a statement on Thursday.

The company signed a supply contract with a consortium of Dongfang Electric International (SHA:600875, HKG:1072), DEC Brazil, and China Gezhouba Group Corp. Brazil for the engineering, manufacturing, and installation of the new turbine and generator, with commercial operation expected in 2030.

Additional partners include SEEL Engenharia for civil works, Tractebel Engineering as Owner's Engineer, and Egis Group for the environmental package.

SPIC Brazil currently has 5.6 GW of assets in the country and is part of the SPIC Group, which operates in 47 countries and has 292 GW of installed capacity.

China Gezhouba Group Corp. is an affiliate of China Energy Engineering (HKG:3996, SHA:601868).
