Academy Sports and Outdoors reported higher profit and sales in its fiscal second quarter, giving the company confidence to raise its earnings outlook for the year.
The sporting-goods retailer on Wednesday posted a profit of $137.9 million, or $2.17 a share, for its quarter ended Aug. 1, compared with $125.4 million, or $1.85 a share, in last year's comparable period.
Stripping out one-time items, earnings came in at $2.31 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected adjusted earnings of $2.07 a share.
Sales climbed 3% to $1.65 billion, in line with Wall Street models. Comparable sales, which account for store openings and closings, fell 0.4%, compared with analyst views for a 0.2% decline.
"While consumer spending remains pressured, particularly among lower-income households, our team has continued to execute at a high level by focusing on the key events and categories that matter most to our customers," Chief Executive Steve Lawrence said.
Academy Sports is also re-investing tariff refunds back into the business, a move Lawrence said is helping the company to gain market share and strengthen its relationships with customers.
Shares jumped 13%, to $50.38, in premarket trading.
For the year, Academy Sports now expects earnings of $6.05 to $6.45 a share, or $6.50 to $6.90 a share on an adjusted basis. The company had previously guided for earnings of $5.95 to $6.35 a share, and for adjusted earnings of $6.40 to $6.80 a share.
Academy Sports continues to expect sales of $6.23 billion to $6.36 billion, as well as for comparable sales to be flat to up 2%.
Analysts are looking for earnings of $6.07 a share, adjusted earnings of $6.43 a share, sales of $6.31 billion, and comparable sales growth of 0.8%.
