2116 ET - New Zealand's coming GDP data will likely show a sharp slowdown in 2Q, with growth nearly flatlining after the March quarter's 1% quarter-on-quarter growth, says Moody's Analytics in a note. Monthly indicators suggest that the economic recovery lost steam as higher fuel costs weighed on businesses and consumers, it says. Household purchasing power and confidence remain soft, and businesses are holding off on hiring and investing, it says. The GDP data are due Thursday. (monica.gupta@wsj.com)

2055 ET - Bitcoin drops in the early Asian session as higher oil prices and U.S. CPI data firm rate-hike bets, dimming the appeal of riskier assets like crypto. Treasury yields have been moving higher across the curve, which could continue to weigh on the non-yielding cryptocurrency, says Konstantinos Chrysikos at Kudo.com. Markets are bracing for tightening by the Federal Reserve this week, and expectations for another move before year-end have strengthened. Focus is also on the coming vote on the Clarity Act, a piece of U.S. legislation that seeks to set a regulatory framework for digital assets. Passage would likely help buoy sentiment in the crypto market, while a setback could spurselloffs. Bitcoin is down 0.7% at $76,788, LSEG data show, well below the closely watched $80,000 level. 2038 ET - The tensions that often exist between a sitting government and its independent central bank will be on display this week in Australia. The Reserve Bank of Australia has been animated recently in warning about stubborn inflation, and its leadership will appearbefore a parliamentary committee on Friday. Tensions be center stage. RBA Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser said recently that the community is "furious" about high inflation, adding "Everywhere I go, I hear cost, cost, cost, inflation, inflation, inflation." Those remarks could be construed as a criticism of high government spending. The stage is set for a fascinating exchange. (james.glynn@wsj.com; X @JamesGlynnWSJ)

1938 ET - The week ahead in Australian financial markets will be highlighted by further jawboning by the Reserve Bank of Australia. The top tier of the bank's management will testify before parliament on Friday after weeks of hawkish warnings about inflation, including comments that the community is "furious" about stubbornly high inflation. The worsening situation in the Middle East war and interest rate increases by other central banks will offer officials scope to add to their comments about inflation, setting the scene for a further interest rate increase at the end of this month.
