Canada Core CPI Strengthening but from Very Low Levels

0937 ET - Core inflation in Canada was largely unchanged in August from the prior month but is starting to drift upward, says Leslie Preston, economist at TD Bank. That's fueling bets of imminent rate hikes, with Preston noting the yield on 2-year Canada government bonds has jumped 40 basis points over the past month. The August CPI report does not "support this degree of tightening," Preston argues. Core CPI may be moving upward but from a low level, she says, and is likely to stay in the BOC's comfort zone. She adds growth is expected to slow due to fresh uncertainty on the US-Canada trade front.
