Trump Looks to Sideline Canadian Potash with Belarusian Supply Deal

President Trump is signaling a potential agreement to purchase lower-priced potash from Belarus, a move that could challenge Canadian exporters.

In a Monday post on Truth Social, Trump said he is working on a "massive deal" aimed at lowering fertilizer costs for American farmers and ranchers.

The proposal targets a market currently dominated by Canada, the world's largest producer of potash, a vital fertilizer component and an essential plant nutrient with no substitute in global food production.

Belarus, a close ally of Russia, is another major global producer of the mineral. In his post, Trump said that the pricing for Belarusian potash would be "substantially less than we are currently paying to Canada."

Canada supplies nearly one-third of global potash output, with the U.S. serving as the primary market for its exports.

In 2022, Russia used Belarusian territory in its initial invasion of Ukraine. Since then, Belarus has largely stayed out of the conflict, while Washington has also lifted sanctions on the country's potash.

Trump's latest statement comes amid strained trade relations between the U.S. and Canada, following a series of retaliatory cross-border tariffs that have put economic pressure on both sides of the border.
